Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Sheik Zayed, our foundationís namesake, became first the ruler of Abu Dhabi, then the first president of the UAE, and eventually one of the richest man on Earth. Yet, when he was born, his country was underdeveloped and his people were just barely surviving, subsisting by fishing, pearl diving, or farming the scattered oases.

The youngest of four sons, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan was never expected to rule, nonetheless his father took him into the deep desert, to instruct him in the traditional duties of a Sheikh. Traveling by camel, they made the rounds of tribal councils, met fishermen, farmers, and enjoyed the hospitality of the nomadic Bedu. The seven year old Zayed was allowed to sit in at his fatherís majilis, the audience with the Sheikh where any person may put forward views for discussion and consideration. Watching his father settle disputes and serve as mediator, he saw firsthand the value of giving all people a voice. This invaluable training in diplomacy is an example of the peaceful negotiation style for which he became known.

As a young ruler, his own Majilis was always open to the public, where he heard issues, dispensed advice, and encouraged poets to recite. He toured Europe and the USA, and came back promoting the economic benefits of a combined nation of Emirates. When the discovery of oil brought new income, he took immediate advantage of this good fortune to build hospitals, schools, and other services. Then he redoubled his diplomatic efforts with the other rulers, who formed the United Arab Emirates under his leadership. As President, Sheikh Zayed continually invested in civic projects, so that within 50 years, the UAE had become an incredibly prosperous and educated nation. He then built reserves to protect native species and planted over 60 million trees to stop the advance of the desert. His compassion, generosity, and commitment to peace will live on in the Zayed Peace Foundation.

Sheikh Zayedís passing placed a heavy burden of grief upon the people who knew him; and yet, his endless compassion and profound wisdom served as an example to further inspire and unite his people in support of his vision for the UAE and for the world.

His Words and Legacy

Peace

Islam is a civilizing religion that gives mankind dignity. A Muslim is he who does not inflict evil upon others. Islam is the religion of tolerance and forgiveness, and not of war, of dialogue and understanding. It is Islamic social justice which has asked every Muslim to respect the other. To treat every person, no matter what his creed or race, as a special soul is a mark of Islam. It is just that point, embodied in the humanitarian tenets of Islam that makes us so proud of it”.

As a national leader, Sheikh Zayed was widely respected as a man who sought endlessly to promote peace and reconciliation. He devoted his life to the unification of the Arab countries and worked diligently for their common good. Upon the formation of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (AGCC), he played an active role in peacemaking efforts throughout the region.

Sheikh Zayed neither resorted to rhetoric and grandstanding, nor compromised his ethical responsibilities by seeking short-term solutions for the sake of political expediency. On issues that would cause some to waver, he stood firm, expressed his views clearly, and laid out plans to meet the challenges that his nation faced. With his guidance and participation, the AGCC played a significant role in regional peace.

Social Stability

There were a lot of dreams I was dreaming about our land catching up with the modern world, but I was not able to do anything because I did not have the wherewithal in my hands to achieve these dreams. I was sure, however, that one day they would become true“.

Sheikh Zayed grew up during a time when the region’s only means of livelihood came from fishing, pearl diving and simple agriculture.  Although he was born poor, his life was shaped by a strong desire to acquire knowledge about man and his way of life, rather than by a craving for material things.

During his time as the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region, Sheikh Zayed brought remarkable changes to Al Ain. He observed the people’s needs firsthand and selflessly devoted his time, labor and personal resources to build the infrastructure necessary to meet these needs. During his 20 years in Al Ain, he was recognized and loved by the people for his devotion and altruistic works.

His trips into foreign countries inspired and motivated him to create the same standard of living for the people of Abu Dhabi that he had observed abroad. When he later became ruler of Abu Dhabi, he began a massive construction program of schools, hospitals, housing and roads.

Reinvestment of oil and gas revenues into Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure resulted in tremendous social and economic growth; and yet, this was not the end of Sheikh Zayed’s dream. Under his direction, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Arab Economic Development was established, channeling immense sums of money from his nation’s oil revenues to some 40 less-fortunate nations throughout Asia and Africa. With compassion and vision, Sheikh Zayed was always at the forefront of charitable efforts to provide social stability to other nations, especially to war-torn countries. Today, the UAE continues to play a major role in providing development assistance worldwide.

Environment

We cherish our environment because it is an integral part of our country, our history and our heritage. On land and in the sea, our forefathers lived and survived in this environment. They were able to do so only because they recognized the need to conserve it, to take from it only what they needed to live, and to preserve it for succeeding generations“.

During his many desert journeys, he developed an understanding of man, and man’s relationship to his environment. Even in his young mind, he understood that we must use our natural resources wisely and responsibly. He would never have entertained the idea of amassing wealth from natural resources, while leaving future generations with a degraded environment. Sheikh Zayed held a strong conviction that it is our responsibility to protect the environment, and to bequeath to our children a rightful and abundant inheritance of natural resources.

His personal commitment to environmental preservation compelled him to abandon gun hunting in favor of falconry, one of his passions. He believed that the gun would contribute to a rapid extinction of wildlife. He further channeled substantial funds to programs advocating environmental protection, and set aside a significant portion of Abu Dhabi land to serve as a habitat for endangered species and other greening projects.

IN HONOR OF HIS MEMORY

On the 2nd of November 2004, the United Arab Emirates lost a strong and beloved ruler, and the world lost a great man. And yet, even his passing cannot erase the mark he left in the hearts of all who loved him. His son the current ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of UAE once remarked:

He instilled in us the keen desire to be loyal to the principles of leadership, and the value of justice. We pledged to follow his path. Such is the best way of honoring his memory”.

The life and achievements of Sheikh Zayed were characterized by his deep religious faith, his vision, his determination and hard work, his generosity and devotion to the service of his people, his endless pursuit to help the needy and the creation of a better world.

He inspired the vision of a world in which every man, woman, and child can realize his full potential, while also meeting his responsibility to use his resources generously and wisely to make a positive impact on the lives of others. A man of faith who loved humanity, Sheikh Zayed left a living legacy that the Zayed Peace Foundation aims to foster and perpetuate for future generations.

The Foundation is currently in the developing stages of several major projects that we hope, when completed, will help meet the challenges our world now faces in creating a just and lasting peace, sustainable social and economic development and environmental viability.

Through our efforts, we hope to honor the life and vision of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan…not with a monument or statue or street name, but in our hearts.  We hope to honor him by continuing to live out his dream of peace for all mankind.
