Forest of Light
It is only in these last 20 years that we have begun to understand how the forests of the Earth protect and contribute to the health of all its citizens. Now we know that forests are literally “the lungs of the Earth”, creating and transforming the air we breathe. Living trees prevent erosion, help to stabilize groundwater, and soak up and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Trees that are cut down and burned release carbon into the atmosphere. While developed countries had a net reforestation increase of 20 million hectares, this gain was more than offset by the deforestation of 200 million hectares in the developing world. We nonetheless agree that “it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”, and in that spirit we have created the Forest of Light.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, reports that deforestation accounts for 25-30% of the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere each year, a major cause of global warming, according to leading scientific experts. Zayed Peace Foundation believes that man has a duty and responsibility to care for nature just as it cares for us, and to provide for its needs as it provides for ours. Accordingly, the Foundation has developed plans to undertake a massive tree-planting project on substantial areas of land acquired for this reforestation initiative.

Sheikh Zayed, the Foundation’s namesake, planted well over 60 million trees during his lifetime. Inspired by his example, Zayed Peace Foundation will undertake an initiative aimed at planting over one billion trees globally within 10 years. As the number and impact of trees must be placed where it can do the most good for the earth, our forests are not confined to the Middle East.

Forest of Light will offer an opportunity for individuals and corporations alike to become involved in this worthwhile effort to restore a vital part of nature that plays a tremendous role in keeping our earth in balance, while also ensuring that future generations will enjoy the same abundance of old-growth forests that once thrived on our planet.

For this enormous reforestation project, the Foundation has chosen an equally enormous tree – the stately Redwood. Redwood trees frequently exceed 600 years of age, and have been known to live for over 2000 years, and tower to a height of 115.5 meters (nearly 380 feet). The Redwood’s thick, tannin-rich bark and evergreen foliage provides protection from fire and insect damage, while also providing a habitat for a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

For a nominal donation, participants in this project will be able to purchase a Redwood tree that will be planted in the Forest of Light. Each tree will bear the name of its owner-contributor, and will be planted in a section of the forest selected by the purchaser, based on available spaces.

We invite you to join us in our efforts to restore health to the planet, and to leave a living legacy for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
